Here at Pompton Lakes Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer CAT scans for our patients.
CAT scans, otherwise known as Computed tomography, are wonderful when trying to diagnose problems that are not detected by bloodwork and x-rays.
A CAT scan produces a three-dimensional image on a computer screen by taking multiple radiographs and putting them all together into the image, which appears in shades of black, white, and gray depending on the ability of the tissue to absorb the x-ray beam. It is usually helpful to find tumors because you can differentiate between normal tissue and a tumor. Sometimes a contrast dye is necessary to help differentiate tissue.
If there is a tumor, the CAT scan will show us the exact size and location, which will help with treatment.
Patients need to be anesthetized so they stay still for the entire procedure. We typically require an examination and pre-anesthetic bloodwork before scheduling a CAT scan.
We don’t want you to worry about your pets during their CAT scan. We use the lightest amount of sedation necessary to get the perfect view. Also, one or two of our technicians will monitor your pets the entire time to ensure they do well.
If you have any questions about our CAT scan or would like to schedule a pre-anesthetic examination, feel free to contact us today at 973-835-4774.
